The School Curriculum Is a Reception Line
I also want black history to be taught in the curriculum in our schools.
I also want. Black history. The curriculum. Our schools. That is the line.
The Prime Minister said this on Monday 12 October 2026, at a Downing Street reception to mark Black History Month. Helen William, writing for the Standard, puts the line in a room of around 100 guests. He said he was speaking to a room of history makers.
The sentence before it is not about schools. He said he wants Black History Month to be a regular feature, not just in Manchester Cathedral but in Downing Street. He recalled that as Greater Manchester mayor he saw efforts to make the month a proper fixture in the heart of the Greater Manchester calendar, including events at Manchester Cathedral. A fixture is a date on a diary. The school sentence comes next, with the word also.
Also is a joining word. It ties the school line to the calendar wish. One breath holds a cathedral event and a curriculum. The first is a reception. The second is a want in the same list.
The Standard headline does not keep his verb. It says black history is British history and should be taught in schools. Should is a rule. Want is a wish. The line under that headline says he has hosted the reception. Hosted is past. The quotation marks still say I also want.
The Herts Advertiser carries the same PA News Agency copy. It opens on the same Monday reception. It prints the cathedral line and the school sentence, with black history in lower case. Two pages. One wire. Same want.
He then speaks of the Windrush generation and the NHS, and says they have not had the full recognition and justice they deserve. He is happy to say that here tonight. Tonight is the reception.
Neither page names a year group, a start term, or a department paper beside that want.
Ekow Eshun, a guest, said after the speech that he was heartened by the curriculum line. A guest can hear a promise. The verb on the page is still want.
Set the two wishes side by side. A regular feature in Downing Street, like the cathedral events. And, also, black history taught in the curriculum in our schools. The first has a room, a month, and around 100 guests. The second has a verb.
The pattern is a school sentence spoken beside a calendar wish.
A reception is not a curriculum. A want, on Monday, is still a want.
