Further Steps Recycle a Postponed Summit
wanting to take further steps to deepen the relationship with Europe.
Wanting to take further steps is a motion. A postponed summit is not a step. It is a date that already slipped.
The Prime Minister told reporters this on 18 September 2026, after meeting Ireland's Taoiseach at No10 North. Euronews says he was also looking forward to a long-awaited UK-EU summit later this year. That summit was set for July. It was postponed after Keir Starmer resigned. The paper says the meeting is expected to centre on Starmer's Brexit reset, including a possible youth mobility scheme.
Further steps, then, are the last government's diary, moved to later this year. The new office reads the old calendar out loud.
The same day, a GOV.UK note named the visit. Micheál Martin was the first international leader at No10 North. The two were expected to talk about boosting trade, supporting Ukraine, and working with the European Union while Ireland holds the EU presidency. The Prime Minister's printed line is friendship: the Good Friday Agreement, trade, working with Europe, supporting Ukraine. Closest of friends. Further strengthening that friendship.
Friendship is already there. The Common Travel Area is already there. Ireland is already the UK's sixth largest trading partner. Dublin to London is already the busiest air route inside Europe. None of that needed a July summit. None of that is a new step.
A youth mobility scheme is a step. A date in July was a step. "Later this year" is a wait. Wanting is a mood. Looking forward does not fill July. A postponed summit is a hole in the diary.
The GOV.UK page does not name the July date. It does not name youth mobility. It names shared aims and a historic visit. The reporters got the further steps. The press note got the friendship. Both point at Europe. Neither puts a new deal on the table on 18 September.
None of this says Britain should not talk to Dublin. A visit can be a good visit. The point is the size of the verb next to the size of the diary. Further steps sound like a walk that started today. A summit postponed from July is a walk that stopped.
The pattern is a new "further" sold from last summer's cancelled date.
A step that has already been postponed is not a further step.
