Why the PM's 80,000 Returns Don't Prove Control

I said I’d do politics differently. So these are the facts:

The UK has seen the lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020.

We’ve returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here – and annual returns are at their highest level since 2016.

There are half the number of asylum seekers in hotels than there were last year.

And today, we go further by bringing the total number of deployed French officers tackling small boat crossings to nearly 1,050.

But I know that we can’t be complacent on this.

Smuggling gangs are constantly adapting their tactics, and we need to respond quickly and stay one step ahead of the criminals facilitating dangerous crossings.

The small boats crisis is a shared European challenge, and no country can solve it alone. Working with France and our international partners, we will restore order and control to our borders and prevent smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.

The Prime Minister posted this on 3 September 2026. That was the same day he hosted the French president, Emmanuel Macron, at Downing Street. The BBC reported the meeting the same day. Both men said they would scale up work on small boats. Then came this list.

Lowest summer arrivals since 2020. More than 80,000 returns. Annual returns at their highest since 2016. Half as many asylum seekers in hotels as last year. Nearly 1,050 French officers on the beaches.

It is a tidy scoreboard. Tidy scoreboards are easy to cheer.

Look at what sits next to it.

The BBC's figures, published with that Downing Street visit, say 16,513 people crossed the Channel in small boats between 1 January and 1 September 2026. That is 43% lower than the same stretch the year before. Put that drop next to the other number in the same report. Boats that arrived from 2 September 2025 to 1 September 2026 carried 68 people on average. That load has more than doubled since 2021.

In August, a 15-metre dinghy carried 230 people. The BBC called these craft mega dinghies. The gangs did not leave the beach. They changed the boat.

A lower summer total with more people per boat is not a closed route. It is a route that changed shape. Fewer trips can still move a lot of people if each trip is packed tighter. That is the swap the scoreboard hides.

Now take the 80,000.

"We've returned more than 80,000 people with no right to be here." The line does not say 80,000 small-boat arrivals. It does not say 80,000 people who came this summer. It does not say 80,000 people who came this year. It does not say how they arrived, or when the clock on that total started. Highest annual returns since 2016 can be true while the Channel crossing still runs. One total does not carry the other. Returns also mix people who overstayed visas, people found in lorries, and people who never saw a beach in France. The BBC, in the same report, said another 4,712 people were detected entering without permission by those other routes from July 2025 to June 2026. That is a different door. Stacking every door into one 80,000 line makes the Channel look smaller than it is.

Hotels next.

"There are half the number of asylum seekers in hotels than there were last year." A hotel is a bill. It is not a border. You can cut that bill by moving people into other buildings. You can cut it by deciding cases faster. You can cut it by putting fewer new people into hotels even if many people are still waiting. None of those steps, on their own, tell you who gets on a dinghy next week. A smaller hotel bill is a smaller hotel bill. Call it that.

Then the officers.

"And today, we go further by bringing the total number of deployed French officers tackling small boat crossings to nearly 1,050." Downing Street told the BBC that 45 extra officers were being sent to French beaches as a surge team. Home Office minister Anna Turley said more than 1,000 officers were already on those beaches, some of them in the water. So "nearly 1,050" is not a new force. It is last week's force, plus a few dozen.

France is doing hard work. Officers have been filmed cutting boats and being hit with stones. That is real. It is also not a sealed coast. The Prime Minister said as much two lines later. Smuggling gangs, he wrote, are constantly adapting their tactics.

Read that twice. The same post that offers restored order also says the other side keeps changing the plan. Those two claims do not finish the same job. The second one is the warning on the packet.

The pattern is this.

When a government wants to look in charge of a messy border, it publishes the counts it can move. Returns. Hotel beds. Officers on sand. A summer total that fell because weather, patrols, and boat supply all shifted at once. Those counts can all look better while the crossing still pays. If a dinghy that once held 30 now holds 68, or 230, the business has not been smashed. It has been resized.

A border under control would mean the crossing stopped being worth the risk. The BBC still counted more than 16,000 arrivals this year by early September. Small boats still made up 40% of asylum claims from July 2025 to June 2026. Nearly all who arrive by small boat claim asylum, and they stay while that claim is heard. The Prime Minister still needed Macron in the room. He still called it a shared European challenge that no country can solve alone.

That last line does the work. If 80,000 returns had already settled the matter, there would be nothing left to share.

The figures in the post are not made up. Summer crossings did fall. Hotel use did drop. Returns did rise. France did put officers on the sand. You can grant every number and still watch the trick. A government that has a border under control does not need to stack four selected totals in one thread, then warn you in the same thread that the gangs are adapting.

The pattern is selection. Print the column that went down. Leave the bigger boats in the other paper.
